Découvert sur WordPress en mettant en ligne Va jouer dehors : le blogue From Swerve of Shore.

Le photographe américain Aaron Joel Santos, qui vit à Hà Nôi et qui travaille un peu partout en Asie du Sud-Est, y présente un portrait à la fois saisissant, intime et nuancé de cette partie du monde. Même si cela fait près de vingt ans que j’ai eu la chance de passer par là, j’y retrouve la même envie de mordre dans la vie, mais aussi le même calme, entre autres, dans ses magnifiques photos de mode comme celles-ci :

Et petit détail : dans un billet de juin 2012, Santos fait une critique particulièrement rafraîchissante du nouvel appareil qu’il vient d’acquérir. Au lieu de tout décortiquer, il met l’accent sur le fait que, comme dirait mon oncle photographe professionnel, « quand l’outil est beau et bien fait, il nous inspire et on aime l’utiliser… ça fait partie du processus de création ». Les chroniqueurs automobiles gagneraient à s’inspirer d’une telle honnêteté !

Found out on WordPress while publishing Va jouer dehors (which literally translates to: “go play outside”): the blog From Swerve of Shore.

Living in Hanoi and working all over Southeast Asia, the American photographer Aaron Joel Santos presents a simultaneously vivid, intimate and subtle portrait of this part of the world. Although almost twenty years have passed since I have had the privilege of being there, the same desire to live life to the fullest and the same serenity felt then, among others, can be retraced in his magnificent photographs, such as these ones:

And a small detail: in one of his June 2012 posts, Santos offers an especially refreshing review of the new camera he has just bought. Instead of dissecting it all, he emphasizes the fact that, as would say my uncle who is a professional photographer, “When the tool is beautifully designed and built, it inspires me and I like using it… It is part of the creation process”. Automobile journalists would benefit from adopting such a candid approach!
